SUMMARY:Miami Jewish Film Festival presents\, Just As I am
DESCRIPTION:CANADA | 53 MINUTES | 2021 \nJUST AS I AM\n\nUS PREMIERE \nA little film with a great big heart\, Evan Beloff’s (MJFF 2020’s A People’s Soundtrack) new documentary follows the lives of several members of the Shira Choir\, comprised of an exceptional group of singers with special needs\, and the choirmaster that unites them. In Just As I Am\, we meet Daniel Benlolo\, a cantor and rabbi who founded the Shira Choir for special needs adults who must leave the structured confines of school once they’ve reached age 21. He has seen how singing in the ensemble provides these individuals with motivation\, goals\, and community\, and the results are transformative. His efforts are as extraordinary as his choristers’ longing to be together again amid the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. This touching journey through sorrow and joy\, life and death\, shows us how music challenges\, heals\, and uplifts those who are devoted to it. \nAccompanying the film premiere is a discussion with director Evan Beloff\, Cantor Daniel Benlolo\, and moderator Nancy Zaretsky\, Inclusion Specialist at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. SUMMARY:Miami Jewish Film Festival presents\, The Specials
DESCRIPTION:FRANCE | 115 MINUTES | 2020 \nTHE SPECIALS\n\nFLORIDA PREMIERE \nChosen as the closing night film at the Cannes Film Festival\, The Specials is an awe-inspiring\, heartfelt French drama based on the true story of Bruno (leading French actor Vincent Cassel\, Black Swan)\, an Orthodox Jew who runs a home and a day program for the most severely autistic children and young people in Paris\, with his colleague Malik (Reda Kateb from MJFF 2018 film Django)\, a Muslim who trains young people from poor neighborhoods to work as caregivers. Acclaimed filmmakers Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano first received international renown for their film The Intouchables\, one of the most popular French films in history\, and subsequently spent two years working with and getting to know young people with autism in a dance and theater workshop. The resulting film\, which was screened for French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife\, is so authentic and so moving\, it proves that every moment the directors invested in the workshop was worthwhile. Opening a door into the world of teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum\, this is the rare film that comes both from the heart and reality. Nominated for seven César Awards and Winner of the Donostia Audience Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\nDrs. Ellen Greenebaum & Simeon Schwartz \n\n\n\nAwards\nNominated for 7 César Awards

SUMMARY:Miami Jewish Film Festival presents\, Sylvie of the Sunshine State
DESCRIPTION:USA | 93 MINUTES | 2021 \nSYLVIE OF THE SUNSHINE STATE\n\nWORLD PREMIERE \nSouth Florida filmmaker Sasha Levinson aims the lens at her eccentric multigenerational Jewish family in an unconventional hybrid documentary offering a startlingly honest glimpse into modern motherhood that will make parents everywhere feel a little less crazy and a lot less alone. For Sasha\, the act of filmmaking is a way of life\, a creative outlet\, and a salve for the wounds of her past. So when the external world was turning to chaos in the early stages of the COVID-19 health crisis\, she decided to make a film with her daughter in an attempt to stay sane. Sylvie of the Sunshine State began as a filmmaker’s experiment with the life narrative but what emerged is a therapeutic exploration of single motherhood\, distance co-parenting\, and multigenerational feminine trauma which ultimately gives way to healing. During the greatest mental health crisis of our time\, this film provides a shockingly honest look at parenting\, with the intention of helping families everywhere find peace within the knowledge that we are all gloriously imperfect. \nAccompanying the film premiere is a discussion with director Sasha Levinson and moderator Nancy Zaretsky\, Inclusion Specialist at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
