SUMMARY:“Still Distracted After All These Years: Older Adults With ADHD”
DESCRIPTION:The Northern Virginia/DC Chapter of CHADD present our April lecture in our “Understanding ADHD” Lecture Series: “Still Distracted After All These Years: Older Adults With ADHD”\, with speaker Kathleen Nadeau\, Ph.D.\, Founder/Clinical Director of The Chesapeake Center. \nAlthough ADHD is the most highly researched childhood disorder in the world\, we know less about adults\, and almost nothing about older adults with ADHD. Not so long ago we believed that people outgrew ADHD\, and even today\, most ADHD professionals believe that ADHD is much less an issue for older adults.\nStatistics show that the percentage of older adults with ADHD is only half of that for younger adults. In this seminar\, Kathleen Nadeau will discuss Russell Barkley’s ground breaking research that finds a much shorter lifespan (by 12.7 years!) for adults with combined type ADHD. If this is true\, then the lower number of older adults with ADHD is simply a reflection of this shorter lifespan. Many of those with ADHD don’t make it into their 70’s and beyond.\nAccurate diagnosis and treatment for older adults is critical\, yet few psychiatrists\, neurologists and psychologists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in older adults. As a result\, there is a strong risk that never diagnosed ADHD in older adults will be mistaken for early signs of dementia. \nThis is a virtual lecture via Zoom. To register and receive the Zoom link\, please visit Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/still-distracted-after-all-these-years-tickets-147005321875

SUMMARY:Dyslexia - 23rd Annual Montag Lecture: Unpacking the Science of Reading So All Kids Can Learn
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Montag Lecture features Emily Hanford\, award-winning investigative reporter who’s been working in public media for more than 25 years. Currently\, senior education correspondent for APM Reports\, the documentary and investigative group at American Public Media\, Emily’s focus is on equity\, the way we teach reading today\, and literacy – arguing that there can be no social justice until we ensure that every child has access to reading. \nThe lecture will be a must-see for anyone with children who read\, who will read\, who struggle with reading; and also for teachers who have struggling readers\, for scholars who are studying the science\, and for anyone concerned about today’s literacy crisis.

SUMMARY:Dyslexia Awareness Month - Toolkit for Parents\, Educators and Students
DESCRIPTION:You can help those with dyslexia get the support they need to reach their full potential. Simple actions can raise awareness and lead to policy changes\, such as helping more people understand what dyslexia is and using the word dyslexia rather than lumping it together with broad learning disabilities.
