SUMMARY:Virtual Music Program - FREE - Friendship Circle Miami
DESCRIPTION:We have created a Virtual Music Program where we will work on the singing parts and possibly other components like rhythm or other sounds for the same songs that the Friendship Circle Band is working on. We will teach the participants the different singing parts and eventually record them singing the parts. We will also record videos of the Friendship Circle Band playing the songs\, and use them to practice the singing parts with the virtual group.\nThe second component of the virtual program will be songwriting. The goal will be to write a song altogether. The virtual group will write the lyrics and choose the melody while the Friendship Circle Band comes up with the background music using the chords that we have learned. \nFor further information\, please register at the link provided.

SUMMARY:Expert Webinar and Panelist Discussion – Dyslexia: The Neuroscience of Early Identification & Intervention by Fumiko Hoeft and Margie Gillis
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, findings from scientific research in education\, psychology\, genetics\, and the neurosciences have increased our understanding of dyslexia and the importance of early identification and instruction for young children. In this webinar\, Dr. Hoeft will discuss the different components of science and neuroscience informing the development of early screeners that assess school readiness and dyslexia risk in young learners. Dr. Gillis will continue the discussion on how young children identified as being at risk for dyslexia will respond to developmentally appropriate instruction. \nParticipants will learn activities and techniques that will engage children in learning all-important oral language and preliteracy skills to help ensure their readiness for school and future reading success. Dr. Hoeft will also provide demonstrations of a universal screener\, APPRISE\, developed by scientists at Curious Learning\, UCSF\, UConn\, and MIT that is a free open-source mobile app measuring a range of literacy and cognitive skills in young children ages four to eight. \n  \n\n\nMarch 31 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm\nFree

SUMMARY:“Still Distracted After All These Years: Older Adults With ADHD”
DESCRIPTION:The Northern Virginia/DC Chapter of CHADD present our April lecture in our “Understanding ADHD” Lecture Series: “Still Distracted After All These Years: Older Adults With ADHD”\, with speaker Kathleen Nadeau\, Ph.D.\, Founder/Clinical Director of The Chesapeake Center. \nAlthough ADHD is the most highly researched childhood disorder in the world\, we know less about adults\, and almost nothing about older adults with ADHD. Not so long ago we believed that people outgrew ADHD\, and even today\, most ADHD professionals believe that ADHD is much less an issue for older adults.\nStatistics show that the percentage of older adults with ADHD is only half of that for younger adults. In this seminar\, Kathleen Nadeau will discuss Russell Barkley’s ground breaking research that finds a much shorter lifespan (by 12.7 years!) for adults with combined type ADHD. If this is true\, then the lower number of older adults with ADHD is simply a reflection of this shorter lifespan. Many of those with ADHD don’t make it into their 70’s and beyond.\nAccurate diagnosis and treatment for older adults is critical\, yet few psychiatrists\, neurologists and psychologists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in older adults. As a result\, there is a strong risk that never diagnosed ADHD in older adults will be mistaken for early signs of dementia. \nThis is a virtual lecture via Zoom. To register and receive the Zoom link\, please visit Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/still-distracted-after-all-these-years-tickets-147005321875
